Kindergarten at Ås, Akershus
Extension and rehabilitation
Kaja is a kindergarten with a close relationship to nature. It has a large, naturally vegetated outdoor area, and the children's contact with nature is an important part of the educational program.
In the warmer months the large trees on the site are occupied by birds. Their presence has become a natural part of everyday life in the kindergarten, and we have been working on different strategies to give the children an opportunity to follow their development up close.
Together with the kindergarten employees we came up with the idea of integrating nesting boxes with built in cameras in the buildings facade, allowing the children to watch as life unfolds inside. Via screens inside the kindergarten the children can watch as birds inhabit the boxes, reproduce, and feed their fledglings.
Large window openings facing the sky allow children and employees to have visual contact with the sky when staying inside the building.
